backward!

May 30th, 2009

In preparation for the border of my mandala shawl, I have learned to purl without turning my work (purl backward). Awesome! These stitches may actually look more even than when I purl in the traditional way.

ZOMG only 10 rows left on chart 4!

That is all.

Mandala Shawl progress

May 25th, 2009

Last night I finished row 76 of chart 4, which leaves 20 rows before I start the edging. Progress was slower this week because I was sick and alternated between being so bored I had to do something, and being so exhausted I couldn’t even knit. I think I am still on track to finish this thing in two weeks. Still not 100% sure about the edging but after looking at a few people’s projects on Ravelry I think sort of see where it’s going.

Up to now I had thought I was about 70% done with the shawl, but I just learned that I underestimated the number of stitches in the edging by more than half, so I’m really closer to 65% right now.

edit: After reading through some threads on the Ravelry board and looking at A Gathering of Lace, I think I may understand how the edging is meant to be worked. This shawl is going to be awesome.

You know I’m sick when…

May 19th, 2009

…I don’t knit a single stitch all day. I feel like poop and didn’t go to work today. Spent most of the day in bed, except when I was on the sofa. I’m probably going to lose two days on the shawl for this cold. I guess I’ll have to make it up this weekend.

Mandala Shawl

May 18th, 2009

This shawl is all I think about right now. I pulled it out last Sunday (5/10/09) and have been going at it like crazy (well, for me) ever since. I don’t remember when the last time I worked on it was, but when I put it away last year, I stopped on row 18 of the 4th chart. There are 96 rows on the 4th chart, and each row has 576 stitches, so I had a ways to go. Since last Sunday, I’ve finished through row 53, which is about 45% of what was remaining when I picked it up. My progress is encouraging and only makes me want to work on it more. If I continue at this pace, it is possible I could finish it in three weeks, which would be awesome. However, the edging instructions have me completely mystified at this point, so I may hit a bump after this chart is finished. We shall see. In the meantime, I am totally stoked about finishing this humongous shawl.

Gull Stitch Cardigan, etc

May 17th, 2009

I finished the Gull Stitch Cardigan on 2 May 2009. Adam helped me by taking some pictures. I’m not thrilled about the fit, because I was about 15 pounds lighter when I selected the size. Maybe by the time it gets cold enough to wear it, I’ll have lost 15 pounds.

I got my manager to model it for a photo, and I actually think the detail of the cables comes through better in that picture, so I’ll start with that one and follow with the pictures of myself modeling it.

The yarn is Rowan Cork in color Vapor. Cork was discontinued shortly after I purchased the yarn, which is a shame, because I really enjoyed working with it. I used size 10.5 US needles and made the 40 bust size, which I think equated to a medium. I don’t know how much yarn I used. I’ll need to find my notes, which are MIA right now.

WordPress Update

May 10th, 2009

I updated to the most recent version of WordPress (finally) and changed the theme. Now if someone can tell me how to get rid of that line of spam at the bottom of my last post, I’d be very grateful.

I have pictures of a COMPLETED SWEATER but I would like to get better pictures before posting here. I’ll try to get some help with that next week at SLK.

I like socks.

March 15th, 2009

I made some socks. I seem to be doing a lot of that lately.

The yarn is Sunshine Yarns Twist Sock Yarn in colorway Tundra. I snagged this from Tracy’s destash. I used size 1 DPNS (Brittney Birch). I started off doing the Classy Slip-Stitch Sock (I made a pair for Adam a while ago) but I wasn’t really feeling it, so I just went with a basic slip-stitch. I slipped every fourth stitch every other row, and carried the slipped stitches down the heel. I am loving these socks and looking forward to wearing them soon.

The problem with Ravelry is…

March 3rd, 2009

If I was a slack poster before, it’s worse now that I have Ravelry. It’s so easy to post all my stuff there that it makes this page seem redundant. I recently renewed my hosting and domain but I’m wondering why. There’s a good chance this space won’t be here next year…

Anyway, I finished a few things and I’ve already posted them on Ravelry, but I’ll try to do them justice here.

Cable and Rib Socks
I “finished” these in November of 2006, only to discover that the instep of the second sock was shorter than the first. Turns out each sock had the same number of repeats, but the second sock had more repeat in the cuff and one fewer in the instep. I was frustrated and could not bring myself to rip out the toe, and they got stuffed down in the bottom of my stash. I decided to pull them out this weekend. I did not fix the cuff issue – the second sock still has one repeat more than the first. However, the instep is now long enough and the socks are wearable.
Yarn: Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock Multi in colorway Lucky Stripe
Needles: Size 2 DPNs (a note, I’ve recently switched to doing socks on size 1 needles to encourage myself to knit more loosely and let go of the kung-fu grip I usually have on my sock needles)
Pattern: Cable and Rib Sock by Nancy Bush
Pictures on my homemade sock blockers:

I had some yarn in my stash from a Secret Pal exchange a few years ago and finally decided to use it. This is Elsebeth Lavold Silky Tweed. This yarn has been discontinued, but the Silky Wool is still being produced, so never fear. I really liked working with this yarn and I think I would consider using the Silky Wool for a larger project, like a sweater. As it was, I only had three balls so this time around it became a scarf and hat set.
Pattern: Tuva Slouch Hat
Needles: Size four circs/dpns
Alterations: I didn’t really want a slouchy hat so I started the decreases at about 6″. I opted for a basic decrease instead of the eyelet decrease.

Pattern: Waterfall Scarf
Needles: size 10
Comments: So easy, a caveman could do it.

Finished things!

January 2nd, 2009

I have knit things that are finished! ZOMG!

My So-Called Scarf
This project was a Christmas gift for Adam’s mother. I was at a complete loss for what to get her, so two weeks before Christmas I pulled out some Malabrigo Worsted and got to work. I picked this pattern because it looked to be fairly easy and it was one I’d been wanting to do for a while now. I used size 11 needles. I stopped knitting when it reached 5′3″. I meant to go to 5′6″, until I remembered that I still had fringe to add. I forgot to measure it before I gave it away, but it certainly looked long enough for her.

My Socks
Last night I finished the socks I started on at Cookie A.’s sock workshop. The stitch pattern is from one of the Barbara Walker books, though I don’t remember which one, and I didn’t write down the name of the stitch pattern. For future self-designed socks I will have to take greater care. I do not plan on publishing the pattern because (a) I am missing pertinent information as I just detailed, (b) I am too lazy, and (c) these are MY socks. MINE!

Anyway, the yarn is Brooklyn Handspun Signature – Superwash Sock Yarn in colorway Hoppy. I picked this up at Maryland Sheep & Wool in 2008. I absolutely love this color. This is my second pair of green socks so I am going to try to stay away from green for a bit. Knit on size 2 bamboo dpns.

Other knitting news
I started on the cabled hoody but discovered after I was into the second ball of yarn that, duh, they had sent me Malabrigo Worsted instead of Chunky. I ordered it from Webs, and I have to say that they certainly took care of the issue to my satisfaction, and in spite of the error I would not hesitate to buy from there again. Maybe next time I’ll get some Malabrigo Worsted on purpose! I haven’t restarted the sweater yet because I had finals and then decided to make the scarf for Adam’s mom. I may try to get that started again this weekend.

The shawl is still in time out. I don’t know when I’ll pick that up again.

The Gull Stitch Cardigan is still not seamed. I know, I suck.

Shannon’s blanket is still not finished BUT I did start back to working on it a bit recently so there is hope that one day it will be done.

That’s enough for one night.
